For centuries, literature has been an influential instrument in challenging and
changing social norms. Literature possesses an important role in spreading awareness of
current societal concerns by engaging readers on an emotional level.
Literature encourages individuals to question and reconsider established standards by
casting light on issues such as discrimination, inequality, and injustice, eventually leading to beneficial social change.
To give an example, a famous work from William Shakespeare called “Romeo and
Juliet ” challenged social bias in various ways. It is no exaggeration to say that it influenced the alteration in prejudice for social class and gender roles, which existed for a long time.
The fact that Romeo and Juliet challenged their difference in social class and each
typical gender role showed Shakespeare’s willingness to change the usual conventions that were popular in their period and the routined expectations from people.
The importance of literature raising awareness about several paradoxical topics is still
applied to modern days. Therefore, people should not underestimate its importance, but,
instead, consider it in detail.
